| Lennette Newell’s animal portraits exude physical and emotional honesty, images that emphasize a genuine connection between subject and photographer. Her reverence for nature evolved while growing up the on high plains of Western Nebraska the daughter of a large animal veterinarian and cattleman. By age six she was an accomplished horseback rider competing in and winning pole and barrel racing competitions. Cattle, dogs, cats, peacocks and a pet skunk were also an integral part of daily ranch life. The Great Plains are a place of stark beauty and extreme climatic conditions. Vast undulating grasslands punctuated with sandstone buttes merge with a gigantic sky to form an ecosystem that sustains bison, antelope, deer, coyote and rattlesnake as well as cattle ranches and wheat farms. It is this sense of place and experience that have forged her commitment to the environmental preservation and social changes that will be necessary to sustain life on Earth. |
